At least 2 of the failures were new (4 Gbyte) drives. I couldn't tell you which specific component is failing. The noise they make--sort of like the BB in a can of spray paint--suggests problems with the head positioning stuff to me.

As a disclaimer, these systems are in a home office environment, with the unfiltered power and variable temperatures that implies. (We are talking about Boston weather, not Texas, though.)
