Former White House Intern Accused Of
Stalking Stephanopolous

NEW YORK (AP) -- A former White House intern has been charged with
harassing former senior presidential adviser George Stephanopolous.

Tangela Burkhart, of New York, was arraigned July 3 on charges of
first-degree harassment and second-degree aggravated harassment, according
to a criminal complaint made public this week.

Stephanopolous was granted an order of protection, requiring Ms. Burkhart,
30, to have no contact with him.

Ms. Burkhart's attorney, Myron Beldock, would not comment on the case,
saying only that his client was innocent.

Between Jan. 22 and July 2, Ms. Burkhart allegedly followed Stephanopolous
around the city, showing up at Columbia University where he is a visiting
professor of political science, and at his home, prosecutors said Friday.

Ms. Burkhart also allegedly went to a coffee shop and deli Stephanopolous
frequented, followed him to other cities, to private meetings and sent him one
to two letters a week.

Prosecutors did not know when Ms. Burkhart was a White House intern, and
White House officials did not return a telephone message seeking comment.

Stephanopolous did not immediately respond to a telephone message left at his
office at Columbia.

He rose to national prominence during the 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign. He
was White House communications director before moving into an office next to
the Oval Office, where he continued as one of President Clinton's most trusted
aides.
