"...That seems to be the strategy behind a pair of application-server partnership deals that feature large, established vendors linking up with upstarts in this increasingly hot market.

The deals follow Sun Microsystems' recent acquisition of application-server vendor NetDynamics, and play to the expectation of further consolidation in the market...There's no question the market for application servers is evolving into a state where only large, enterprise suppliers have a good shot at success," said Mike Gilpin, an analyst at Giga Information Group, Norwell, Mass. "That's not to say today's small vendors won't make it, but they'll either be bought or grow to be big..."
