Ibexx - Re: "Are you still leaning toward the Sony series in terms of
quality/value/compactness?"

I recommend the Sony Notebooks VERY HIGHLY! Excellent quality - and PERFORMANCE in their new machines. They offer 266 MHz Pentium II's and maybe soon a 300 MHz version.

I would also look very closely at DELL - they make excellent products and appear very price aggressive.

There are many other good brands but Sony and Dell are up at the top.

I tend to ignore IBM and Toshiba because of their extensive use of that silly eraser/pointer - but that is my own personal preference. I prefer a track-pad pointing device (or a Wacom Tablet which I use on my Desktop).

Ibexx--

Off Topic: A friend of mine runs a large notebook repair facility in Maryland. He has recommended Toshiba, Compaq, and IBM as the most durable machines. He also cautioned me to have at least a 3 year repair policy since a good percentage of machines in corporate use (20% over 3 years) do have problems.

The DEC HiNote line is at the very top in terms of performance, durability, and great user features. It's also at the top in price, but if cost is not a big issue this is the premier machine. Mine has Intel 266, 14 inch 1024/768 24 bit screen, 8 GB hard drive, etc. Also VERY small and lightweight, easily fits in my briefcase. Take a look if you want to see the very best.
