CSW,
The big problem for HP is leveraging their digital and
Mixed-signal capabilities. The HP83000 has been fairly successful
and has great high-speed digital capabilities. The HP94xx series
is their mixed-signal offering and has been hugely successful in
Japan. The HP94000 is the next generation mixed-signal offering
out of Japan and has not gained much market acceptance. The digital
portion of the system is simply an improved version of the 94xx NOT
the digital from the HP83000 and therefore WEAK.
It also has limited pin count at 256
pins. Problem is they've not been sharing technologies to make
a better mixed-signal solution targeted and higher speed and
expanded digital pin counts like the other players out there.
The systems come from distinctly different environments.
In the huge subcontract markets of Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, and
the Philippines I think they have less than 10 systems installed
compared to the 400+ Credence Vista/DUO, 100+ Synchro, 500+ Teradyne
A5's / Catalysts. Getting the Germans and the Japanese to work
together to come out with a killer SOC system seems like the
imposible dream.
