Merrill and Lynch may have been separate at birth. Probably same
could be said for Pierce, Fenner, and Smith. Dunno for Lewinsky and Tripp.

FWIW, I do agree that SS is underperforming for Postwar Americans.

Underperforming describes an investment, which SS was never intended to be. As a political lever, designed by politicians to be used by them to manipulate the American people, it has performed brilliantly.
