Maris batted third, followed by Mantle

And yet another * beside Roger's name - I'm sure many people would argue.

What a great team though - Elston Howard, Moose Skowran, Bobbie Richardson, Clete Boyer, Yogi Berra, Mantle and Maris and then throw in Ford, Terry and the rest of the pitching staff. Anyone remember Ryan Duran? His glasses were so thick the opposing batters flinched at every pitch!

While I won't comment on the dimensions of Yankee Stadium for Maris and Ruth as well, some food for thought:

-In 1961, Roger Maris was walked 94 times; in 1927, Babe Ruth was walked 138 times.

As of today, with 46 games LEFT in the season, Mark McGwire has been walked 121 times.(Griffey and Sosa way under those #s)

-In 1961, the art of the relief pitcher was still in its infancy; in 1927, it was virtually non-existent. I would absolutely love to know what % of the HRs Ruth and Maris hit were hit in the 7th inning and beyond.

Today, managers reach orgasm when their starters go 5 good innings, then they got mid-relief, and a closer...that is virtually the base case scenario today.

Neither Babe Ruth nor Roger Maris ever faced a pitching staff of the caliber of the Atlanta Braves.
