STAC is up 5% today... meanwhile the rest of the market is getting the sh-t kicked out of it!

I'm telling you folks... good things come to those who have faith in the little guy.

What upside potential!

Redundant File Elimination Covered; Reaffirms Stac's Position as Data Compression Innovator and Leader

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Stac, Inc. (Nasdaq: STAC) has announced that U.S. patent number 5,778,295 was issued by the U.S. Patent Office for NetPack(TM) technology covering critical components of Replica(R) Network Data Manager (NDM). The patented technology adds significant value to Stac's patent portfolio and product line, and uniquely positions Replica NDM in the emerging PC backup and recovery market. Doug Whiting, Ph.D., Stac's chief technology officer, originally filed the patent application in 1995.

"Replica NDM breaks through the traditional barriers to practical, full- system PC backup and recovery," said John Ticer, president and COO of Stac. "The award of this patent confirms the unique nature of Replica NDM and highlights the competitive advantage of our NetPack technology."

"This patent endorses the real innovation of Replica NDM," said Chris Shipley, industry analyst and executive producer of the Demo Conference. "Doug and the team at Stac have developed an elegant answer to a problem that has stymied serious desktop backup solutions in the past. The NetPack technology makes comprehensive backup of business critical data both possible and practical."

Until recently, comprehensive PC backup either was impractical or the amount of data at risk was not enough to merit the costs. As the size of hard drives has increased and the use of laptops has proliferated, more and more business critical data are in jeopardy. Recent innovations have made PC backup more practical. Pipelines are bigger, modem speeds are faster, and compression technology is improved. Stac has taken these innovations to the next level, overcoming bandwidth, storage and administration obstacles to make comprehensive PC backup a realistic possibility.

Replica NDM leverages Stac's industry-leading expertise in data compression and "bare-metal" system recovery to allow zero-administration PC backup over LAN or dial-up networks. One of the key components of Replica NDM is NetPack, a unique, three-tier data compression technology. The core enabling technology in NetPack is redundant file elimination (RFE). RFE uses cryptographic signature techniques to efficiently compare files on all protected client machines, making only one copy on the server with pointers to the common file for each PC.

RFE and other elements of Replica NDM promise to make total PC backup over the network a reality. Its components allow backup without excessive loads on the network or user systems. This essential advantage, combined with RFE's significantly reduced storage space requirements and zero-administration information recovery, enables a breakthrough in protecting desktop data.

In a recent white paper from International Data Corporation (IDC), analyst R. Paul Mason wrote, "Stac's Replica Network Data Manager (NDM) provides an innovative solution to this problem that makes possible a simple and efficient way to supply 'Zero Administration' information recovery for Microsoft Windows networks without creating excessive network or user system loads and without requiring excessive storage capacity." Replica NDM is now available.
