PSINet Offers Local Dial Internet Coverage Throughout Switzerland
Business Wire - August 10, 1998 09:32
GENEVA, Switzerland/HERNDON, VA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 10, 1998--PSINet Inc. (NASDAQ: PSIX), the first and largest independent commercial Internet service provider (ISP), today announced that its wholly owned Swiss subsidiary now offers Internet access at the price of a local call to business customers in all Swiss urban areas. Switzerland is the fourteenth-largest global telecommunications market with revenues of U.S. $8.5 billion.
While price is a determining factor for businesses choosing Internet services in Switzerland and throughout Europe, availability, reliability and performance are becoming more critical factors. To this end, PSINet offers its local area network (LAN) interconnection services through a choice of nationwide digital ISDN 2B (128 kilobits per second) connections or 56k analog modems. This gives businesses in Switzerland reliable options for scaling their Internet growth as performance needs evolve.
"Approximately 90% of our business customers require some type of remote access. With Switzerland's tariff structure, it is very easy for locations to fall outside of typical local calling zones," said Mickey Coggins, director of network operations for PSINet Europe. "PSINet's nationwide dialup service allows for economical, reliable, secure and easy access to the Internet regardless of location."
In 1996, PSINet's wholly owned subsidiary in the UK, PSINet Ltd., began offering business dial access with a local call throughout England, Wales, Scotland, the Jersey Channel Islands (UK), and Northern Ireland. Earlier this year, PSINet Germany began offering similar full coverage throughout that country. PSINet offers commercial Internet dial services at local calling rates in metropolitan areas covering approximately 80% of business markets in the United States, Canada, Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands, Hong Kong and France. These developments accentuate PSINet's continued growth worldwide. In fact, in the past four months aggressive international expansion has brought PSINet services to eleven of the top 20 telecommunication markets worldwide.
PSINet continues to develop innovative technologies to assist customers in using the Internet for business. Commercial dial-up access for both LAN and host connections has always been important for PSINet since it introduced the first such services available on the Internet in the early 1990s and continues to be the mainstay of PSINet's service portfolio. These standard connectivity services have also been refined to support a variety of value-added services including global roaming for mobile user remote access (PSINet InterRamp); multi-site secure enterprise connections (PSINet IntraNet); and small-office-home-office connections (LAN Dial and LAN-on-Demand). In addition, PSINet connectivity services also support or work in tandem with a variety of business applications such as electronic commerce, Web hosting and multimedia, security services, Internet faxing, and PSIVoice solutions. As worldwide growth continues for PSINet, its comprehensive services and heritage of focus on the Internet will remain a strong differentiator.
