(given a 6 deck shoe) surrender if possible against a 9,10, or ace. Basic strategy says to hit against a 7 or 8 and stand on anything lower.

IMO, nonsplitable, hard 16 at a place where you can't surrender, is the worse card total you can have (14 and 15 are the other stinkers). The way I play a 16 is to grab my bet and run for the door if I have alot of money on the table.

Otherwise, watch the flow of the card if you don't count. If alot of small cards have been dealt and the pple hitting before you are pulling lots of the little ones, don't hit. Lotsa big cardz are going out, then I might hit. If I'm uncertain, I'll stand and kick myself when the next card turns up to be a 5. I rarely hit a 16. If I know the shoe to be rich in 10's and the dealer has a 9, 10, or ace up, then I might hit in that I assume the dealer will not need to draw a card.

Either way you're screwed.
