Chuz -
I will point out that each satisfied customer is an unpaid salesman for the product, and judging by customer satisfaction polls, Dell has a much larger cadre of unpaid salesmen

Great point, and Dell has excelled at this. I have lots of anecdotal as well as survey data that says Dell has been ready and well prepared to engage customers in this space, and the customers are well satisfied.

Keep in mind that the 'mainstream' market (where Dell's current products fit) is growing more rapidly than the market in general, and Dell is taking share from most of the other players in this space, not least because of their excellent customer relations. Dell could manage growth approaching 100% in these products for several years without hitting the wall, just using their current model and great execution.
