David, one thing you may not be aware of is that Brown is owned by Chase Manhattan Bank. This is because Brown was owned by Chemical Bank before it acquired Chase and adopted the Chase name. This might give you additional confidence in Brown.

BTW, I do NOT work for Brown of Chase or, for that matter, anybody else. I'm self-employed. I do have a Brown account and find them reputable.

Dave,

I want to thank you (so I will) for your kind comments.

I have a helpful (I hope) suggestion to you regarding how to transfer expeditiously.

Make it a partial transfer. Leave some cash and/or a security in the old firm. With a partial you can track the transfer process pretty easily, by talking to both firms' transfer departments and you will only be unable to trade the stocks for a day or at most, two days.

If you leave a security you don't expect to be selling soon, you can bring it over as a "full" transfer after the others have arrived safely in your new account.

I think you'll be happy with Brown. They are no-nonsense, don't do any coddling, but don't do any crazy, personalized, malicious stuff, either. Once in a while they do something really nice, (like bust a trade for you) but I wouldn't count on that. You'll know what your account balance is every morning and you will be able to reach a broker quickly. The very low commission is the same, phone or online. There are no hidden fees or surprises. No undisclosed "research" fees. The nicest thing is they have the lowest margin rates I've ever seen anywhere, by a lot. And the commissions for both options and stocks are very low. Their online quotes are very good in an emergency but they don't display size, nor the volume of each trade. They do cover BB's and good option quotes online though, and you can get more info, like quotes on the three options exchanges, on the phone. You can talk to the margin department or the options department or customer service and will get accurate and courteous service.

I guess you don't appreciate how good things are till you have a really bad experience.

Good luck there, and let me know if I can help in any way.

Linda
