I hate to say this,
But DELL got where they are by being cheep,
Or rather less expensive than the competition.
That is how DELL grew.

Now DELL is trying to up it's corporate image because they are not 10-20% below their competitors anymore.

You're right...Dell didn't get to where they are by giving away computers.

Dell got to where they are because of great marketing strategy AND giving a quality product at a very competitive price. Knowing how to continually reduce their production and turn around time, etc. Furthermore they take care of the people who got them where they are today (employees as well as investors.)

Business is not as simple as being the least expensive..if it was then all the failed or "also rans" selling computers would be high flyers. There are too many people who do not understand a business MUST have something other than price to stand on or gravity's going to win the war.
