Ken,

Couldn't you also argue that these sub $1000 PCs could also serve as a way for a retailer to add margin by adding a zip. Spend a few bucks on an ATAPI Zip and have the retailer install - you still come in under $1000 bucks, and the retailer makes some quick pocket change considering the ease of install.

Obviously this is an aftermarket scenario, but when you state:

"Plus, adding this device is an 'extra step', one that will be 'forgotten' by 90%+ of the buyers of these cheap PCs."

you get back to the issue of awareness creation. If/when Iomega starts building awareness for Zip in the holiday season, you could see a lot of these "extra steps" which are really just a baby step when installing an ATAPI Zip.

Ken -

You weren't the naysayer to whom I was referring.

In fact, I wouldn't classify you as just a naysayer. I believe that you are able to weigh positives as well as negatives. I know that you and I tend to look at things differently, but at least you don't just automatically place a negative spin on every single move Iomega makes.

I was countering the argument that the cheapo PCs wouldn't even have room for Zip drives.

I do agree with you that the very cheapest PCs will not soon, and may not ever, include Zips as standard. That doesn't really concern me. As I said, some of them don't even have modems.

But you don't have to go too far above the thousand dollar price point before you do start seeing Zip drives included as standard equipment. Examples include a Compaq model I have seen for $1,299.

None of this means Iomega will ever return to the world of growing revenues. On the other hand, they may surprise some people.
