The answer is not contained in that news fragment from CPQ.
There should be no incentive to reduce prices if in fact they are low on inventory. Are you saying that they are reducing prices to sell what they do not have to sell? Also, you are neglecting the 7-8 weeks of internal inventory which CPQ is carrying.

It is the same old shell game that CPQ has been playing for recorded history. Where is the inventory? Is it in the channel or is it in CPQ's warehouses? Did they come up short on their build to forecast model or are they simply cleaning old inventory off the shelves?

Or perhaps they are only running out of server products because they have to eliminate the old server products before they sell their new Xeon based units (otherwise they get stuck with more dead inventory).
