Cabletron to announce management services By Stephen Lawson InfoWorld Electric infoworld.com Posted at 7:42 AM PT, Aug 10, 1998 Cabletron's Spectrum division, now breaking itself out as a network management company with a highly touted framework, this week will announce that it is extending that business into services. Spectrum will announce two services to be provided from its headquarters in Durham, N.H., to enterprise LANs and WANs around the world. Cabletron Systems Remote Management Services will allow enterprises to fully outsource the management of their LANs and WANs. Remote Spectrum Administration Service will offer installation, updating, and monitoring of existing Spectrum management systems in enterprises. The company began providing such services to a few customers earlier this year, according to Cabletron officials. Although some large systems integration companies and service providers already offer remote management services, other makers of management platforms have not yet done so. Officials said the services could be offered through a carrier or other service provider in the future. The services are designed for companies that want to turn over to outside experts the increasingly complex job of managing their enterprise systems. Through links to third-party software, Spectrum can manage desktops, servers, and applications as well as network infrastructures. Customers of both programs can contract for specific levels of service, such as full-time or business-hours support, and more detailed or less detailed reports. The services will be priced as low as $36,000 per year, according to Cabletron officials. One analyst said outsourcing could give significant costs savings. "If it costs you $250,000 a year to have Spectrum manage your network, that may sound like a lot, but that's the cost of four staff members," said Chris Nicoll, an analyst at Current Analysis, in Sterling, Va. "You can't run a 24-by-seven operation on four staff members."
