SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 1998--Novellus
Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:NVLS) today announced it has reviewed Semitool
Inc.'s patent infringement lawsuit, filed on Aug. 10, and has
concluded that the suit has no merit.
In the suit, Semitool alleges that Novellus' recently announced
SABRE(TM) copper deposition system infringes on two Semitool patents.
The two Semitool patents are U.S. Patent No. 5,222,310, issued
June 29, 1993, entitled "Single Wafer Process or with a Frame," and
U.S. Patent No. 5,377,708, issued Jan. 3, 1995, entitled
"Multi-Station Semiconductor Processor with Volatilization." Neither
patent contains any reference to copper.
"The suit has no merit and we will vigorously fight it," said
Richard S. Hill, Novellus' chairman and chief executive officer. "We
assume that Semitool was motivated by Novellus' new role in providing
revolutionary copper technology solutions."
