Danitec, like Hong Kong makers, however, sees great potential in the West. "With DVD players, westerners will be able to watch digital video technology, which is very exciting," Chang said. Acer's first DVD player, the DVD-1100, was co-developed with Hitachi of Japan and is produced at Hitachi's factory in Taiwan. Currently, Acer ships from 500 to 600 units per month. The DVD players are initially being sold on the domestic market, but several projects for export are on the way.
