Tatung and Acer are C-Cube DVD player customers. Taiwan...........

Taiwan's electronics sector, known for its ability to ramp up production and bring costs down, is a prime example. Although Taiwan's VCD industry boasts more than 200 players, only large companies with sufficient capital and R&D strength to obtain DVD Forum approval have entered the DVD field. Currently, Tatung Co., Esonic Technology Corp., Danitec Corp. and Acer Inc. are among the known DVD player manufacturers in Taiwan.

Acer expects DVD players to gain popularity in Southeast Asia, where VCD has had greatest success, faster than in other markets. Danitec, like Hong Kong makers, however, sees great potential in the West. "With DVD players, westerners will be able to watch digital video technology, which is very exciting," Chang said.

Acer's first DVD player, the DVD-1100, was co-developed with Hitachi of Japan and is produced at Hitachi's factory in Taiwan. Currently, Acer ships from 500 to 600 units per month. The DVD players are initially being sold on the domestic market, but several projects for export are on the way.
