Stks 'Near Bottom' Of Tumble; Fundamentals Good - Analysts
August 11, 1998 5:40 PM

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The stock market
downturn is nearing its bottom and will begin to rebound
as investors focus on the strong fundamentals driving the
market, two market insiders agreed.

Mary Farrell, an equity strategist at PaineWebber Inc.,
said the latest market losses are nothing more than a
"very normal correction."

Low interest rates and the potential for stronger
corporate earnings in coming quarters will woo investors
back to the fold, she told CNBC.

Gerold Klauer, co-chairman of Gerard Klauer Mattison
& Co., said small- and mid-cap stocks look particularly
promising as the market's decline begins to shallow out.

Included in Klauer's stock picks are several companies
in the consumer sector, including Gap Inc. (GPS),
Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (ANF) and The Limited Inc.
(LTD).

"Consumers are still upbeat" about their own financial
situations, he said.

Farrell also likes smaller-cap issues, especially
technology stocks, which she said suffered a particularly
severe selloff over the last few weeks.

However, drug stocks topped her list of embattled
stocks to be had on the cheap. She named
Warner-Lambert Co. (WLA) and Schering-Plough
Corp. (SGP) as two bargains in the sector.
