I would speculate that everything hinges on the answer. If there is no extrahuman force/presence involved, <edit out a small book> well, we're on our own. If there is an extrahuman Force/Presence/God, then uor religious or mystical nature strongly suggests to us that this force is all-powerful and eternal. This is (I think!) a universal trait of all religion. So - being in tune with this Force becomes big-time important. The folks in robes have figured out a long time ago how to strap our bent for superstition to the plow. If you believe that you are the arbiter and the minister of the Way of God, well - waht's to keep you and your brotherhood from going on a millennium-long over-the-top power trip?!
