Hi:

I was in CUBE during the middle of 1997 and frequently monitored DVD developments via this thread. Been out of touch but have always been interested in getting back into this sector if a recordable DVD was getting close. Could someone give me a quick update of the current status of recordable DVD (or should I say re-recordable ?)...how about VCR replacement ?

Thanks much,
John

The new E5000 range of encoders are:

E5210 for cost-effective distribution and private networks

Without compromising on quality the E5210 is extremely cost effective but still comes packed full of features designed to
maximize functionality. The E5210 combines MPEG-2 4:2:0MP@ML encoding with a host of features such as spatio
temporal noise reduction, 16 pre-set and user definable operating modes, local and remote control and an easy to use front
panel control with LCD display, making it an excellent match of price and performance.

E5410 for the contribution market

The E5410 combines both 4:2:0MP@ML and 4:2:2P@ML MPEG-2 encoding and offers the very best performance and
user friendly functionality, without a high cost of ownership. The E5410 takes the E5210 feature set and builds on this by
including the provision to operate in both 4:2:0MP@ML mode and 4:2:2P@ML mode with a bit rate range of 1.5 to
15Mbit/s and 1.5 to 45 Mbit/s respectively.

The inclusion of features such as noise reduction, 3:2 pull down, extensive VBI coverage and customer specific tailoring,
together with the ability to run with a wide bit rate range and low delay in 4:2:2P@ML mode make the E5410 ideal for the
contribution market.

E5610 for high end contribution and distribution

Based on an NDS designed compression solution, the new E5610 encoder provides the best possible quality MPEG-2
4:2:0MP@ML and 4:2:2P@ML encoding for a wide range of applications over an impressive bit-rate range. With its unique
design, including NDS' Fully Exhaustive Motion Estimation, the E5610 encoder sets new standards in encoding performance.
The E5610 gives the highest quality images at very low bit rates, while keeping the cost of ownership low and very affordable.
The E5610 encoder is packed with advanced features such as spatio temporal noise reduction, ultra low delay mode, internal
test pattern generation, logo insertion, 3:2 pull down for flawless picture quality. In addition, the E5610 includes full support for
NDS Reflex(TM), the sophisticated statistical multiplexing solution which dynamically changes the bit-rate of a channel from
frame to frame. NDS Reflex operates over a wide bit rate range, ensuring that bit rate is allocated where it is needed, picture
quality is maintained and bit rate saved for the provision of extra channels or data services.

DirecTV Nets 81,000 In July

Aug. 10, 1998

Continuing with its strong monthly subscriber gains this year, DirecTV added 81,000 new subscribers in August, taking its total well past 3.8 million.

EchoStar's DISH Network reported it added 73,000 new customers in July, bringing the total customer base to 1.455 million.

In July, PrimeStar's subscriber recruitment efforts continued to be hampered by its evolving restructuring, with the service adding 16,764 net new subscribers during the month.

DirecTV says Japan subscribers total 152,400

TOKYO, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Japanese multi-channel satellite broadcaster DirecTV said on Wednesday that its subscribers totalled 152,400 as of the end of July.
DirecTV, which is partly owned by Hughes Electronics Corp of the United States, launched its multi-channel satellite broadcast service in Japan last December.

It said in a statement it had reached a pact with developers to install multiple dwelling unit systems for 85,000 homes in 1,500 apartment buildings and expects to attract subscribers from people moving into the apartments.

The broadcaster has met tough competition from SkyPerfecTV, formed from a merger between Sky Broadcasting (JSkyB) and Japan's PerfecTV.

PerfecTV was launched in late 1996 and SkyPerfecTV says it has 750,000 subscribers.

DIRECTV Expands Satellite Capacity

biz.yahoo.com

New Spacecraft Will Replace DBS-1 at 101 Degrees in Mid-1999
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 11, 1998--In a move that will expand channel capacity and strengthen in-orbit redundancy, DIRECTV Inc. Tuesday announced that it ordered a new satellite from Hughes Space and Communications Co. (HSC).

The new spacecraft is an HS-601HP model satellite that will be launched in mid-1999 and positioned at 101 degrees among the three existing DIRECTV spacecraft, pending approval by the Federal Communications Commission.

The new satellite will be used to replace DIRECTV's capacity on DBS-1, which experienced a failure of its primary spacecraft control processor (SCP) on July 4, 1998. As designed, DBS-1 automatically switched to the on-board back-up SCP, enabling it to continue providing uninterrupted service to more than 3.8 million DIRECTV subscribers.

Upon successful launch of the new satellite, DIRECTV's capacity on DBS-1 will remain available as in-orbit back-up. Additional details regarding the SCP failure investigation are available in a separate announcement issued Tuesday by Hughes Electronics Corp. (Contact Richard Dore, 310/662-9670.)

The replacement spacecraft will provide DIRECTV with more than 20 additional channels of Ku-band capacity above that which DIRECTV currently uses on DBS-1. The additional capacity will be used to deliver new programming services including expanded basic and premium subscription services.

''This new satellite will provide the extra insurance DIRECTV needs to provide our subscribers with long-term, uninterrupted subscription entertainment services,'' said Eddy Hartenstein, president of DIRECTV.

''The extra capacity will also enable us to create additional revenue opportunities and provide new services to our subscribers, which will increase the appeal of our service and further strengthen our leadership position in the market,'' Hartenstein added.
