Eric, I ran Solaris X86 about 4-5 years ago. I found it quite favorable compared to NT (no faster, no slower - really felt about the same running X11) and found it very close to a Sparc environment. (e.g. code I wrote ran without change on both platforms.)

Other people commented to me that they felt Linux ran much faster, but I felt that Solaris was fast enough for my purposes, and had the advantage of cross-compatability

I'm not sure just how you are going to compare the two side-by-side. They are different beasts with not much in the way of common software. Perhaps a Netscape server would be a decent test, or Netscape browser for the UI side of things.

I think it's more a matter of what you use them for. Solaris is definately a better choice if what you are doing is hands-off, automatically-scheduled batch processing kinda stuff, going out to the net, doing this, doing that on it's own. NT stinks for that sort of thing, as there isn't much support unless you write your own software.

Heck, I'd run one just to be able to route my mail through it and run Procmail and Spam Bouncer! :) (Which I currently run on a shell account that I pay a monthly fee for.)

Solaris is better. There were some benchmarks done in the past.
Solaris can handle much higher bandwidth (hits/min) than NT.
The number I saw was at peak it was about 2.5 times higher
capacity, but on the average it was 40% more efficient ..
for the same type of machine. But it is hard to tell
because Sun has better networking software in the first place.

But my guess as to why you couldn't log-in is that they
underestimate the number of people intersted in participating
in this program.

Hi Jon - Glad to know that I was not the only person experiencing the problem.
I am anxious to test the two systems (NT vs Solaris) side by side to see if one
is more efficient.

I still like SUNW long term but if they are to make it to the next level, they must
show that they have a low end product that can compete with NT. This will
prove to me that there is an upgrade path (using SOLARIS) for the small and
mid-size business. If not, SUNW must look at more cross-platform promotions
with pre-installed Solaris installations and working e-commerce applications
that a small business can purchase installed and working. COMPQ or Dell
would be a good choice.

I will post my findings of my test once I have every
