The telecoms will NOT put in cable and ATT/TCI might be a relic.

That's been my stance all along and I suspect AT&T's adding TCI to its harem is a way of circumventing the RBOC strangle-hold on the last mile. I don't for a minute think they'll install new cable to every neighborhood in the country. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they use their cable resources to offer ADSL. Not long ago there was a news release saying @Home was patnering to install ADSL in several trial areas in Northern California, so I know it's possible.

What's happening with the RBOCs is a little like All Hallows' Eve, anyway. Dress up as an independent in order to say you're competing with those who really are independent. That way everyone can pretend all conditions are equal. It would take the wisdom of Solomon to please the opposing sides and from what I can tell, the FCC's a long ways from that.

At any rate, I'm betting on fibre to the curb and ADSL/VDSL to the house. And if the deployment of cable spurs the RBOCs to action, all the better.
