Sun Microsystems and ACTV Net to Provide Virtual Learning Solution

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 11, 1998--

Companies Will Market Sun Network Computing Products with ACTV

Net's eSchool Online(tm) Software to K-12 Education Market

Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: SUNW) and ACTV Net, the Internet division of ACTV, Inc. (NASDAQ: IATV), today announced a joint effort to provide Sun's network computing products and eSchool Online(tm) to the K-12 education market. eSchool Online is ACTV Net's Java(tm) education software package, which is based on the Java programming language.

The strategic alliance allows the companies to leverage each other's strengths to meet an increased demand for integrated virtual learning solutions in the K-12 market. Under the agreement, the companies will work together to offer eSchool Online in conjunction with Sun servers to large school districts and state education departments for statewide programs. The companies will also coordinate marketing activities in this high growth market.

"eSchool Online is the perfect complement to Sun's vision of network computing," said Robert Iskander, Director of Global Partner Sales for Academic & Research Computing at Sun. "eSchool Online is proving that network computing applications can create unique learning opportunities with the Internet without requiring teachers to become technology experts."

eSchool Online offers a distributed model that can be customized and updated to meet the individual needs of teachers who are learning how to use new technology in the classroom. eSchool Online creates a virtual learning community by simultaneously combining Web material -- organized and automatically delivered to student desktops -- with moderated chat and other media such as educational video, streamed audio and video conferencing.

Sun's Enterprise server family and JavaStation(tm) network computers provide a fast, highly reliable and cost-effective way to deliver Web-based educational content. The Sun Enterprise server product line features nine servers that range from one to 64 processors and the reliable Solaris(tm) operating environment. The Solaris operating environment provides seamless interoperability to popular desktops and network computers -- enabling file sharing and printing capabilities for any document and access to network and other intranet services.

"Our partnership with Sun strengthens eSchool Online's position as a more integrated technology solution for large-scale customers," said Bruce Crowley, President of ACTV Net. "The agreement will help both companies demonstrate the value of network computing as a powerful educational tool and promote the use of the Internet for instructional applications and professional development."

The K-12 online learning industry is expanding rapidly. According to the U.S. Department of Education, nearly 80 percent of U.S. schools are wired for the Internet, up from just 35 percent in 1994. There are more than 100,000 public schools, three million teachers and 51 million students in the American K-12 market. Industry experts predict that the total online learning market may reach three billion dollars by the year 2000.
