Solaris: Free for the Taking
pubs.cmpnet.com
Sun Microsystems plans to offer its Solaris operating system free-of-charge for non-commercial uses.

Approved "non-commercial" uses include teaching, research, software development, software testing and other non-commercial use on PCs or SPARC workstations. Sun will charge these users a nominal fee to handle the cost of media, shipping and handling.

Public domain software that is precompiled and formatted for easy installation on all Solaris platforms and releases can be downloaded for free from www.sunfreeware.com. Free Java tools are available at sun.com/edu/java/free.
