To all - after reading those things about European standards setting in RCR Wireless News, I wonder if today's larger percentage move down in ERICY vs. QCOM means anything?

Jon.

Phone Software Upgrades and Carrier Views from the Near North.

Just got my monthly PCS bill from Bell Mobility. In their summer flyer they are promoting "PCS Plus Upgrades". The software in our QCP2700 can be upgraded with the latest performance improvements and features without having to replace the handset. We have to take it to our nearest Sony or Qualcomm authorized service centre and the process takes 5 minutes. Kinda like those software radios. Further info can be found at bellmobility.ca

On the carrier front, competition is still fierce. The two new entrants are burning up loses at around $100M/qtr. Of the two existing players Bell Mobility is steadily building revenues and Rogers Cantel appears to have finally stablized their declines. Based on revenue as at Jun 30th (Mar 31st in brackets) it breaks down as follows:

Bell Mobility (CDMA/AMPS) $337m ($297m)
Rogers Cantel (TDMA/AMPS) $306m ($297m)
Microcel Fido (GSM) N/A ($18m)
Clearnet (CDMA/IDEN) N/A ($40m)

Clearnet announced 35K new PCS subscribers for Jun 30th quarter. They now have a total of 120K PCS subs and they all have a Sony dual mode/dual band phone. Rogers has just changed their whole strategy. They now compete on service instead of price. I believe they have been losing many folks as their fixed term analog contracts come up for renewal. They have just started pricing plan similar to Bell Mobility (and Clearnet). That is 100 PCS minute for $25 cdn/month. Their ads now promote the quality of their digital service. It's as if they are trying to convince people that "There Isn't a Difference". Fido has yet to report any results for the current quarter.

Can wait for my Anita[TM] Pilot Upgrade. Coming soon to our nearest QCentre, I hope. nf
