I'm out on a limb here. I have no knowledge of the precise definition of AON or "All Optical Network" but if the name implies that there is no optical to electrical conversion in the network whatsoever, I can understand why Birck would strenuously dispute it.

The analyst who implied that AON would obsolete TITAN had obviously been thinking of previous generations of TITAN where an optical to electrical conversion had to take place to cross connect. Tellabs had been working diligently to produce optical interfaces on the TITAN for a long time. It now has them so that they can take OC level signals directly into the cross connect and send them out at OC levels. This is a relatively new capability for the TITAN but critical to use in all SONET based networks. Telco operators had been bitching at suppliers of cross connects for years that they did not have optical interfaces, which required extra expensive equipment in front of and behind the cross connect to perform the grooming functions needed in the network. So Tellabs fixed it, but only recently.
