Mind you, McCall did not control the content or the focus of the article, which appeared to be more about SSB than HBO or McKesson. Given that, and the fact that the whole thing is, strictly speaking, moot anyway, it's sort of fortunate we got any kind of hint as to the original thinking behind the merger (in Monika Brown's quote).

For the benefit of those, who, like me, may be relative newcomers to HBO, I looked back and have noted that HBO has been through all this before: from a high of $72+ in January 1997 to a low around $41 in early April, two purchases and a market correction later, for a drop of 41%. Two splits later, we're down over 31% in the current downturn. The good news is that this would indicate the bottom is probably not too far. The bad news is that this also indicates that it will likely take another good earnings report (I know, we just had one!) to truly bring HBOC out of its current funk.
