Semi always lead semi-equipment. Semis never turn up until it's all doom and gloom in semi-equipment land, ala all the memory guys spending huge in 1996/7 downturn and ending up prolonging the glut. AMAT's problems are all over the globe, exactly what a semi bottom would predict. But having said that, I would view events in Far East just as seriously but independently from current semi-equip woes. I think the winners in the next round are not only the guys with the next generation products, but also the guys who can buy their way to the next generation 0.18um deep UV process. Obviously neither the Japanese nor the Koreans are in too good a financial shape to do too much of the latter now. But if LSI can keep plugging along and making 10% of sales Q after Q, LSI should do OK. Notice I did not mention the Chinese - those guys are crazy. Until somebody in Taiwan really lose their shirts in semi and go belly up, they will keep putting down their cash. Wasn't Confuscious who said that money breeds ...... patrick
