DDI/IDO have rolled out in several hundred cities and have been marketing the service fairly aggressively. To this point I believe that QC has shipped several hundred thousand ASICs to Japanese handset providers (Panasonic and Toshiba). This would mark a promising beginning and nothing that I have heard suggests that Japan will be anything but a growing positive for Qualcomm as the year progresses...keep in mind the lesson of Korean cellular demand. The South Korean economy is in far, far worse shape than Japan, yet demand has continued at an excellent pace. Japanese are far richer and do love their high tech toys. Also, people continually forget that the service provider (DDI/IDO) MUST load the network with subscribers to (a) make any money and (b) pay for the multibillion dollar network that was just installed. So, as in Korea, I would expect to see DDI/IDO running promotions and subsidizing handset costs in order to generate subscriber growth.

As for a slowdown in Korea, all I can say is that QC management certainly has not heard about any problems because I checked with them today. Also, as I have said many times, the Korean "market" is not just domestic Korean consumption...Samsung and LG (etc.) have a large and growing export business (to the U.S. and other countries). IMHO, the bears like to spread nasty rumors on days when the market is soft in order to "pop" the stock for an extra point or two. Oh well.

Best regards,

Gregg
