I'll have to admit I'm a bit confused. Compal makes DELL notebooks? Manufactures or assembles? Does it put DELL's name on them?

Dell has several product lines for different markets. Budget priced notebooks are designed and built in asia. Besides Compal there have been notebooks built by Sony. The performance models are usually designed by Dell and built in asia. Final assembly of hard drives, memory etc. is performed by Dell.

In the desktop arena some products are designed by Intel others by Dell. All are assembled and tested by Dell. All products, even monitors, carry a Dell logo.

Thanks for the welcome 3. TigerPaw had a better explanation than I could give you, but I do know that DELL's Inspriron cases are the same as the ones from Quantex. OT, this means that, despite owning a Dell desktop, I'll prolly buy an IBM 600 when I need a lap top as I cannot see Dell getting Compal or whoever to invest in the ultra slim form factor. Plus I prefer the erasure head to the touch pad.
