Thanks for your views. There are a couple of points that I believe are not quite correct.
The first is that Japan has a democracy today, but I believe that the LDP is still run by its largest faction ( the Takeshita faction ) and this has been true for a while. ( A number of my Japanese friends believe Kanemaru was the most influential man in the world in the eighties, a name my non Japanese friends never recognize).
Secondly the politicians do not actually run things but the ministry staff do.
Yes there is deregulation in airlines and lower domestic fares are now available. I do believe however that JAL and ANA will match the low cost carriers and try and run them out of business. ( They dont have domestic laws on dumping and domestic competition is ruthless, favoring the large and financially well endowed- witness the PHS debacle and its impact on DDI )
I am bit more sceptical on the financial side.
I do agree that it is a matter of being patient but I think it may be beyond three more years. I do wish that that was not the case and studying evidence to the contrary.
