The popular Internet gateway Infoseek Corp. (SEEK - news), Tuesday announced its ''first big plunge'' into electronic commerce with the purchase of Quando Inc., which publishes online shopping guides.
The company said the acquisition will enable it to add to its Web site information about comparative shopping online, similar to features already offered on top services like Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO - news) and Excite Inc. (XCIT - news).

This enhanced shopping content will be a major component of the new Web site it plans to launch later this year with Walt Disney Co. (DIS - news), Infoseek said.

''E-commerce is a huge opportunity and key to our... strategy,'' Harry Motro, President of Infoseek said in a statement. ''Services that give consumers the comparative information they need will change the spending habits of the Internet consumer and set a new standard for comparative shopping.''

As more and more retailers take their businesses on line, consumers are becoming more sophisticated, wanting to use the Internet to find better deals.

Infoseek valued the purchase of Portland, Ore.-based Quando at $17 million. The deal was completed through the exchange of Infoseek stock.
