Nancy,
You have an interesting view about Jimmy Carter. There is no doubt that he was very happy, more than anyone else, to see Clinton elected. That was because the Democrats lost the presidency for a long time after the fiasco of his 4 years. It's true he has much integrity and is very intelligent. If only Clinton had 1/10 as much integrity instead of none at all. But Jimmy Carter had a poor grasp of the real world and mismanaged foreign policy to his political ruin. He ignored the CIA warnings about the threat to the Shah of Iran's government and then after his overthrow he ignored the CIA's warnings about the threat to the security of our embassy in Iran. As a result a friendly government that sold us very cheap oil was lost, our economy suffered a terrible shock when the cheap oil was gone causing domestic shortages and sky rocketing prices. That rippled through to every sector, we had out of control inflation and extreme volatility in the markets. And our embassy was over run and our people were taken as hostages and held for 444 days which was over a year of humiliation for Carter and showed his foolishness and mismanagement. Carter also on television said some very foolish things like, when the Soviet Union invaded Afganistan he said the Russians lied to me. Talk about showing how unqualified he was to run our foreign policy. He took their word and did not take any other precautions that would deter the Soviet Union from invading. He had warnings from the CIA which he again ignored. He had thought the russians would keep their word about an agreement not to invade afganistan. A president should not be that naive, perhaps his own integrity became his down fall because he thought because he kept his word that others would too and was surprised when they didn't. We would have been better off if Ford had been re-elected. There is no doubt that Carter has integrity, maybe in times like these that's not enough to run the country and protect the interests of the United States abroad.
