To All: Just completed the SOLARIS order process and it is working! They have used a new URL (http://www.spbkoffices.usec.sun.com) that now works as a Sunw server should. Orders are processed in security mode and a credit card is required.

Total cost of the Intel version $10.00 and $8.50 for USPS Priority mail.

This message was posted at the order form site:

"...Due to overwhelming initial demand for the Free Solaris for Non-Commercial Use promotion, you may experience significant delays when ordering.

We ask for your patience during this initial period, and suggest
that you return to place your order sometime in the near future.
Sufficient quantities of software *are* on-hand to fulfill the
current demand, so no rush on your behalf is required.

We apologize for any delays you may be experiencing..."

<<What is the best browser to use in the SOLARIS environment?>>
I noticed that Netscape Communicator V4.05 supports Solaris 2.5.1. Therefore my earlier comments regarding Navagator compatibility were wrong.

I would assume that all the Plugins now supported by Netscape Navagator would also work with the Solaris version. The MS Internet Explorer does not support Solaris only Windows and NT.

Here is a table showing platforms supported and noted errors in the different versions.

Sunw should be proactive with their installed base of Solaris users showing all the major software companies and applications that will work on their OS. Perhaps they can sponsor a shareware Website categorizing these applications and utilities. There are quite a few Windows NT sites and very few similar Solaris sites.

A brief search on several search engines shows this to be the case.

Developers continue to utilize NT because so many of the useful utilities can be quickly obtained (by downloading) over the Internet. Sunw is perhaps a year behind in getting similar coverage.

Hi Eric:

All I can say is, be patient and keep on trying. I've had to
try quite a few times before getting in.

At work I am using Solaris 2.5.1, The browser I use is netscape
4.02. But I am also trying the new netscape 4.50.

Since Solaris is a unix varient, there are quite a few window
managers out there that look really nice. They are all
customizable, there are Next, Win95 ... etc. look a likes
as well as the traditional UNIX windowing system.
I am waiting for someone to develope a Mac look a like
window manager on UNIX.
