Kid and All: What was truly amazing about cc was the guidance or the lack thereof. Last quarter they were guiding for a bottom between fourth quarter 1998 to second quarter 1999. Now guidance is per cc: "[I]n view of recent customer behavior we cannot assume that we have hit bottom nor can we predict the length and duration of cycle." Not one analyst called them to the carpet on this one. Why couldn't they simply ask if prior guidance was still in play or whether they had thrown in the forecasting towel because of the uniqueness of this downturn? I think the latter, but it would be nice to hear it from the mouth of Morgan. But no, the analysts focused on DRAM parity push out from mid 1999 to the end of 1999. Nice to know, but DRAM is only bringing home 26% of the bacon and everyone knows that the recovery will be lead by technology buys and not capacity buys.

Hey, someone listen to the conference call and count the number of times they said they were "taking market share." Tell me this was not a talking point.

AMAT did not buy their stock last quarter period. Did not take it on the dip to $26 in mid June. I see lack of conviction here. They are managing for break even and conserving cash.
