Brazil To Launch Credit Risk Database For Banking System

Dow Jones Newswires

BRASILIA -- Starting next week, Brazilian banks will have access to a
Central Bank credit risk database that identifies people and companies
with overdue loans, an official said Tuesday.

The database will list the names and fiscal identification numbers of
borrowers who have debts surpassing 50,000 reals (BRL)($1=BRL1.17),
said Luiz Carlos Alverez, head of the Central Bank's banking inspection
department.

Only banks will have access to the database, he said.

The Central Bank took two years to develop the database. It will begin
with information reported by banks for the month of June.

The lack of information on borrowers in the banking system allowed
people and companies to take out loans in several banks despite their
poor records.

Well Mark, how in the heck do you explain trading today? Stock is trading at about $6 over book. How much lower can this think go before we see some short covering?

I suspect so many folks have been burned with this no-brainer that there just aren't any buyers at the moment.
