Glenn - I've been out of the loop, and just noticed this on the YHOO thread - has this been covered? (apologies if so) According to nasdaqtrader.com M&S is the #1 volume market maker for AMZN as well as YHOO. >>WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The Charles Schwab Corp. has confirmed that its Mayer & Schweitzer Inc. is part of a Securities and Exchange Commission probe into allegations of trading violations on Nasdaq. SEC staff "indicated it intends to recommend to the SEC that it initiate a civil enforcement action against numerous broker-dealers and individuals ... in connection with certain customs and practices in the trading of Nasdaq securities," Schwab said in documents filed on Tuesday with the SEC. The action will include M&S and certain individuals associated with M&S, Schwab said. The subject matter of the allegations is similar and related to those in the U.S. Department of Justice antitrust proceedings settled by M&S in July 1996, the SEC's enforcement action against the National Association of Securities Dealers Inc. and Nasdaq in August 1996, and the private antitrust actions settled by M&S in December 1997. The SEC has been investigating about 100 traders and dozens of brokerage houses, alleging that they colluded to fix prices on the Nasdaq stock market. Wall Street firms already settled with Justice and paid close to $1 billion to investors last year in a civil class action suit to settle similar charges of manipulating stock prices and widening the trading spread on Nasdaq. The SEC is expected to wrap up negotiations with the firms by Aug. 18 and may propose an industrywide settlement at the end of the month, an industry source said.
