Probably no vendor appreciates ODIS potential more than MSFT. And ODIS is becoming a more integral part of several MSFT strategic initiatives. I wouldn't be surprised to see MSFT make a move for those as well as not wanting one of the RDBMS competitors owning this technology. ODIS is at that point where the Street doesn't yet grasp the opportunity, and the Momentum players haven't cause to jump on. However, as you point out, vendors close to the battle know. I actually added ODIS as 1/2 of my 1998 retirement fund contribution, plus doubled my portfolio position, yesterday. A gut feeling reinforced by the last two announcements, I guess! Love it long term, but think 1998 might be the year?

IFMX taking over ODIS?? That'd surely be a bold move from CEO Finocchio... I don't think of IFMX as a probable buyer: remember their Illustra acquisition? The last thing Finnocchio wants is to confuse Wall Street... as well as his customers!
Now, talking of a ''bargain basement price''... there's our problem child, that is Versant! This company could be targeted by Sybase or Oracle. Yet, what will trigger the takeover scenario, IMHO, is Jasmine's momentum: we can't expect MSFT, SYBS, ORCL, etc. to just sit and watch CA and ODIS grabbing all the profits in a 40-50% growing business!
I agree with Edward on MSFT as a most likely predator: bundling with IE, joint seminars on Visual Studio, combining with Windows CE/AutoPC,... what's left?? Further, the DoJ couldn't accuse MSFT of any monopolistic grip in the DBMS market! Since ORCL, SYBS and the likes own 80% of a multibillion $ market... But don't fool yourself on the pricetag: any would-be buyer will have to offer a minimum of $20.00 a share. After all, Hotmail was acquired by MSFT for $450M!!!!
ODIS is too strategic a piece in the brave new world of distributed computing and it's poised to reap over $100M in 1999. If it gets acquired by a MSFT, these $100M could easily be leveraged into $150-180M in 1999.

Regards,

Gustave.

If you even bother reading anything on Edgar about IFMX, you would know that IFMX will be just able to upgrade its computers and little more during the next 2 years or so, according to legal restrictions imposed by certain financial contracts. There is no way that they will be buying anything during the near term.
