I think a better movie analog can be found in the movie "Used Cars". Curt Russel plays a fast talking salesman, Rudy, trying to raise $100,000 to buy a state congressional seat. His boss asks him why he wants to be a politician.

Roughly, from memory, he says that it's perfect for him. "The people are looking for someone to tell them what they want to hear. I'm that man!!" That and he got to keep half the graft. The other half went to the party.

The more I think about it the more I think Rudy is the boy. Except of course Rudy had a real, productive, private sector job.
