You ask why we customers should not pay for firmware upgrade. There is a very good reason. You pay a lot for the phone, and when the firmware is improved (often bugs removed) you are entitled to get the better firmware. Plus, the carrier's system operates more efficiently.

Jim, I think there may be more $ in charging for the bells and whistles on a monthly basis. That seems to be the "Way of the Nineties".

The new GSM folks (FIDO) reported today. 53K new subscribers giving them 150K on their roster. Still loosing more than $100m per quarter. However, revenue has now reached $30m/qtr. I am amazed at the up front $$$ being burned to kick start the new kids on the block. In this regard, Maurice and SpinCo will be a challenged.

As expected CDMA and GSM are both making inroads. Starting to see cell phones everywhere. PayAsYouGo plans are now being pushed by the TDMA folks. Once the "Squeegee Kids" get them, the growth game has to be shutting down.

If you are interested, the GSM folks release is here. nf
