Hot air Vice President Al Gore, who blames just about everything except teen-age acne on supposed global warming, has been cheered on by the media elite, who ignore evidence to the contrary. Brent Baker of the Media Research Center yesterday responded to Mr. Gore's announcement the previous day that last month was the hottest July on record. Mr. Baker's view, presented at mediaresearch.org , offers this tidbit from the Competitive Enterprise Institute: "The numbers that Gore's camp keep pointing to are derived from ground-based thermometers in various locations around the world. These thermometers, however, cover at most 18 percent of the Earth's surface. They are extremely localized and many are subject to the heat fluctuations created by large cities. Satellite-based climate studies, however, which are able to survey the entire globe, have shown no warming trend over the last 20 years." The center also pointed to the following recent bulletin from the National Center for Public Policy Research: "The heat waves in the South and West are not particularly unusual, nor have the high temperatures this year been record breaking. Los Angeles hit 109 on July 12, 1891, 10 degrees warmer than this year's high; Little Rock broke 112 in July 1986, 11 degrees warmer than this year's top temperature; and Death Valley hit 134 on July 10, 1913, 5 degrees warmer than this year's high." Hot air II The National Anxiety Center, a clearinghouse for information about scare campaigns, accused Vice President Al Gore on Monday of being "the point man for the biggest hoax of this century." "Vice President Gore is lying to Americans when he says that global warming is occurring, using the recent heat wave as proof," said Alan Caruba, founder of the center. "Gore knows, as does every meteorologist in America and worldwide, that, in this century, the Earth has only warmed 1 degree Fahrenheit and that warming cycle ended in the 1940s." >>>Washington Post also carried a similar article on Sunday about >>>Clinton's attacks on HMOs which were full of misrepresentations >>> and lies.
