It is starting to look as if I will never get to find out how Datek's trading service is. This is because their accounts department has proven utterly incompetent in funding the Roth IRA account I had established with them.

My case was not the simplest, to be sure. I have a regular IRA which was rolled over from a 401k at a previous job. I wanted to convert this into a Roth IRA at Datek. Complicating matters was the fact that the company holding my IRA had been acquired by another, though in fact the merger was not made official until well over a month after I had filed the paperwork for the transfer. It has now been four months, and I have had in the meanwhile had to re-submit some applications that were somehow lost.

The next-to-final insult was a bill from Delaware Charter, Datek's IRA Trustee, for $67.00, for an empty account! The absolutely final insult was the customer support number given on the invoice (800-209-6241), which connected me to either a fax machine or a modem.

Monday I gave Datek my ultimatum, get this mess straightened out and get it straightened out fast, or scrap the whole thing. They promised to keep in touch with me as they attempted to contact the company now holding my IRA. I gave them a final warning that time is critical, then hung up. I have not heard back from them since.

I have drafted a letter to Delaware Charter requesting my account be closed. If nothing else happens today, it goes in the mail.

If you look in the bit of my text you quoted, you'll see the word "sale". That should be a hint, to whether it's a buy or a sale ;-)

This is the rule more than the exception, and given it cost around a dollar a minute to call the US from here in Europe, and chances are that they'll argue their way out of paying anyway, I don't think it's worth the hassle.

In any case, I've made my decision: I'm moving trader. I'm in the process of getting the paperworks through, but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna trade while waiting.

The reason for my post is not so much for personal gain, but simply to warn others who might consider using Datek, or confirm for those other unlucky individuals who might be in the same position as myself, and who may not be sure if these scalps are "coincidences" or purpose.
