There's not a lot I can do about them. they're a pain in my ***. So I ignore'm, and I hope folks can find it in their hearts to realize scientists are as diverse in their personalities and core beliefs as any other large group of people.
I see nothing mutually exclusive about devout faith and good science. Imho the rub happens when either side oversteps its boundaries. For a Christian, the no-no is trying to impress a literal Genesis reading upon natural history. For a believer in "modern thinking", the no-no is to make the leap from theory to proclaimed fact. Evolution is a showcase. The honest scientist says "Evolutionary theory is just that - a theory. Unproven, and *how* it happens we don't know. But for the facts as we have them, evolution is the simplest story that seems to work. As long as it works, it's our premier theory and worth teaching. If a fact comes up which stubbornly WON'T fit evolutionary doctrine, we're on the pavement looking for a newer, more useful theory." Note all the qualifiers.
This was supposed to be a short response. Guess I "got started." :-)
