Oh, so just because Eric tells us that NICs and modems are not commoditized, we're supposed to believe him? What's the sense in that? In a telling admission, IMO, Eric asserts that brand recognition mitigates commoditization. That means that 3COM is FIGHTING commoditization; it doesn't mean that commoditization does not exist. Don't get me wrong, I think Eric is a great manager, and if anyone can make money from NICs and modems and other "edge" products, it's him, but let's not fool ourselves into believing that there is not a high level of risk in operating at the edge of the network where commoditization is occurring.
