Fujitsu goes to .22 micron to make the smallest 64M SDRAM die at a faster speed & (probably) lower power.biz.yahoo.com Fujitsu Announces Development, Volume Production of Industry's Smallest 64Mb SDRAM Intel PC/100 Conformant Device Boasts Chip Area of Just 51.34 mm SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1998--Fujitsu Limited has developed and will soon begin volume production of the world's smallest 64Mb Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) that conforms to Intel Corporation [Nasdaq:INTC - news]'s PC/100 standard. The devices will be available to Fujitsu Microelectronics Inc. customers in North America by the end of September. Fujitsu's new 64 Mb SDRAM will be built using the company's 0.22 micron manufacturing process. The new device has an area of just 51.34 mm, with a memory bus clock speed of 100 MHz and an address access time of 16 ns (nanoseconds) or less. It is available in x4, x8 and x16 bit configuration, all of which provide the same fast address access time. Utilizing its advanced 0.22 micron process technology and implementing various circuitry improvements, Fujitsu was able to shrink the size of the new SDRAM chip, reduce address access time from 26 ns or less to 16 ns or less and realize memory bus clock speed of 100 MHz. ''With their faster speeds and higher functionality, SDRAMs are replacing EDO DRAMs as the device of choice for personal computer and workstation main memories,'' said John McElroy, vice president, marketing, Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. ''Fujitsu has been an innovator in SDRAM technology since its arrival in 1995, and we are continuing that commitment to leadership with the development of these PC/100 versions.'' Samples of the new 64Md SDRAM will be available by the end of September, with prices beginning at approximately $12 each. Volume production begins in Japan in October.
