MIPS Technologies, Inc. Announces Strategic Alliance With Broadcom Corporation Business Wire - August 12, 1998 09:11 MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1998--
Broadcom to Incorporate MIPS Processor Architecture Into its Broadband Communications Semiconductors
MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MIPS) and Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM) today announced a license agreement that will enable Broadcom to use MIPS processor cores throughout Broadcom's wide range of digital communications products. Broadcom's integration of a microprocessor into its next generation communications integrated circuits (ICs) will enable a complete cost effective, single chip solution for the cable modem, set-top, xDSL, satellite and high speed networking markets.
This announcement demonstrates MIPS' commitment to partner with market leaders to expand the use of the MIPS architecture in the digital consumer and embedded IC markets. MIPS and Broadcom are working together to extend the MIPS architecture and to design highly integrated, advanced semiconductor products for communications applications.
"Integrating the MIPS architecture into Broadcom ICs will allow for a complete system on a chip, thereby continuing to significantly lower the cost of broadband communications products. With the addition of processor technology, Broadcom now has all of the intellectual property necessary to create single-chip cable modems, digital set-tops, and Ethernet adapter cards," said Dr. Henry T. Nicholas, III, Broadcom's President and CEO. "We required a processor architecture that is high performance, cost effective, well supported by software development tools, and has strong industry wide support. MIPS Technologies was able to meet all of those requirements."
"It is our goal to help market leaders like Broadcom better service their customers," said John Bourgoin, CEO of MIPS Technologies, Inc. "Broadcom has developed ICs for some of the most significant broadband communications applications. This agreement is evidence of MIPS' commitment to diversify and extend the array of licensees we serve. MIPS continues to demonstrate market leadership by licensing technology which enables customers to build high performance, cost effective semiconductor solutions for digital consumer and embedded applications."
