Toshiba's settop for HDTV due next year. Hmmmm..................

Toshiba announced the expanded DTV lineup during the Toshiba Women's Tennis Classic in Carlsbad, Calif., last week. Toshiba said it will market models 65" DW65J80 ($8,999 suggested retail) and 56" DW56J80 ($6,999) -- in the second and third quarters of 1999.

Steve Nickerson, Toshiba's marketing VP, said sets are fully "DTV-compliant," meaning they will receive all 18 ATSC formats, and will display HDTV in the 1080i format. The 720p high-definition format will be up-converted to 1080i.

The sets will, however, have 16:9 widescreen aspect ratios and Toshiba's previously announced ColorStream Pro video inputs, which will connect to the company's new SD7107 DVD player to display 480p-level pictures using conventional DVD software.

Both models will include integrated dual NTSC tuners to receive analog TV signals and operate a PIP window. Additionally, NTSC images will be line doubled.

Toshiba also plans to deliver its first set-top DTV tuner/decoder, model DST3000, "in the first half of 1999 at a price to be announced." Similar to the newly announced DTV receiver sets, the set-top will receive all 18 ATSC formats, and will output high definition signals in the 1080i format, while up-converting 720p to 1080i.
