Well Doug--good question. I know that I heard somewhere awhile back that availability on current cell systems is 90-95%. G's capacity model assumes 98% availability. Iridium has focused on always being able to complete a call in accordance with their premium service credo. If they can't get that number improved, it will ruin that marketing/business plan. But, we have to wait on details. Is the call completion rate low due to sat problems(there are constant rumors of 2 more dead sats--I no longer pay them attention until the company comes out with details or the SeeSat folks spot them), handset problems, line of sight problems, hand off problems, power problems, etc. The source might give you a clue as to the possibility of a fix. This assumes the info is correct in the first place. You would think G would be easier to program as it is basically a giant CDMA cell system, base stations and all. The originator of CDMA is working on the software, so I think we have the best men for the job. Having said that, QCOM is often slow in development, so we will EVENTUALLY have a flawless system!

Dougin: Iridium has the potential to be delayed, short term. However, G* has just announced their 2nd major delay, Zenit launch pushed back to September 20 and service inception sometime in the second quarter of 1999. I thought that this was a relatively simple system. Inception has been pushed back twice due to launch difficulties, we have no idea what delays may arise once they finally get their entire constellation up and begin serious testing.
