Jim P., even better. CHECK this out!

I did some research and determined that the Compaq Deskpro EP was more like the Dimension than the Optiplex. I went back to www.dell.com, and found a comparable system.

Unfortunately, DELL wouldn't let me strip down the computer as much as Compaq would, so I had to keep on-site service, and Office 97.

Also, DELL wouldn't let me configure it with the smaller hard drive, the smaller video card, or the slower cd-rom that Compaq uses (I guess Compaq still have them in inventory).

But nevertheless, DELL still beats Compaq.

Well William,

It really depends on what your criteria for the valuation of a stock is most accurate. In DELL's case its P/E has been based this year on a closer approximation to its actual earnings growth rate going forward.

Last year DELL's P/E was quite a bit less than its actual growth rate.

The market has attached improved rating to DELL's earnings reliability and is willing to pay up to its P/E (forward) for that kind of reliable growth.

If you do not like that what can I say? I never buy a company for what it did last year, I am buying based on my estimate of what its prospects are going forward.

Jim 'whaz' up with you, don't you get it????

I thought we have (at least some us have) already established the fact that Dell didn't get where they are today by being cheap.I thought we just went through all this.

Assuming you have seen the Q2 Dataquest/IDC report it just might be time for you to wonder..'how come Dell has reached the No.1 position in PC sales right along with CPQ in the U.S'.Think on it and let us know what the answer is if and when you get it,ok.

Here is another home work assignment:
(1)
If Dell's ASP is higher than anybody else including CPQ and Dell sold same number of units of PCs in the U.S as CPQ, now who would have generated more revenue and profit margin in the U.S ?

Choose one:
A.DELL
B.DELL
C.DELL
D.Not CPQ
E.All of the above except D

(2)
If 'cheap' is what counts how come the king of 'Cheap' NEC/Packard Bell hasn't made a red cent now or in the past ?

Answer preferably in no more than 3 sentences and in 'own' words, you may however consult VICTORIA GATE M.D for the answer.<VBG>

Excerpt from Gartner Group/Dataquest

San Jose, Calif., July 27, 1998-Despite economic difficulties in Asia/Pacific and Japan, the worldwide personal computer industry continued to post steady growth as shipments surpassed 21.1 million units in the second quarter of 1998, up 13.9 percent over the same period last year, according to preliminary statistics from Dataquest, a unit of Gartner Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: GART). The U.S. market sustained double-digit growth, increasing 12 percent, as market leader Compaq/Digital and Dell were in a virtual tie with 14.4 percent market share and 14.2 percent market share, respectively.

PPl always forget about the cost of MS Access. If I bought another PC I would need MS Office as any work I bring home has to be compatible with what I do at work. With MS Office commanding such a large share of the suite market I would not recommend any PC purchase without it. I have a colleage who bought a PC thinking it was so cheap and now he finds he needs word at around $100 retail and Excell and over $100 retail. Office costs around $400 retail and you get powerpoint also. I use all three at work and also use Access. MS Office pro with Access is around $500-$600. All Dell computers (and Gateway and Micron) come with MS Office. All other software (unless you are a graphic designer - in which case by a G3 Mac) that is bundled with PCs is of much less worth compared to MS Office due to the sheer number of companies that use it. Whose company here has not standardized on MS Word?
